World AIDS Day 2009 Comemmorated

World AIDS Day 2009 was comemmorated at SMIMS on the First of December. Free Medical check-up and Lunch for around 100 People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) was arranged in collaboration with Snehatheeram, an NGO working in the field of rehabilitation of PLHAs. There was also an awareness program at the lobby of the OP building, where videos related to HIV/AIDS was screened.

This year it is planned to commemorate World AIDS Day at SMIMS in a different manner. Previous years it was either public meets or seminars. This year we are bringing in over 200 People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) from different parts of Kanyakumari District and giving them Free Medical Examination, Medicines and Lunch. This programme is being organised in collaboration with an NGO – Snehatheeram – that works in the field of Rehabilitation of PLHAs.

We also plan to address on of the major problems faced by PLHAs – that of Stigma and Discrimination – by conducting an awareness programme for the general public. It is because of the lack of awareness that people with HIV gets discriminated against and the scale of this is so huge that this is being referred to as the second pandemic. This issue can be addressed only by taking concrete measures to make people aware why HIV is not to be dreaded in normal social life.

Research Methodology Workshop for Students, 2009

Research Methodology Workshop for the Students is a regular event of our Institution for the past 3 years. But this time it was a part and product of the newly constituted SMIMS Research Unit. The workshop was held for 2 days on 20 & 21 October 2009. There was an excellent response from the students’ side as anticipated. We had to restrict the participants to only 30.

The programme was much focused. The objective was to train the students in Research Methodology so that at the end of the workshop the students would be able to construct a research proposal by selecting and applying the appropriate research design and execute the research and effectively present the results to scientific meetings or publication.

The faculty from our Institution effectively managed all the sessions. The participants were given a Research Handbook to go through the process in detail. At the end of the workshop, all the 30 students presented their own protocol with much enthusiasm. Of them 7 protocols were chosen for immediate undertaking. Others shall commence as and when the students become free from their exams.

Lunch snacks and tea were served on both days and everybody had a wonderful experience as evidenced by the feed-back session at the end of the workshop.

World Population Day – 2009

An awareness program was conducted for the public on various population related topics on 11th July, 2009, the World Population Day. Around 120 people from the general public participated in the program. Medical Students presented the health topics and Faculty members answered the questions of the public.
