Research Methodology Workshop for the Students is a regular event of our Institution for the past 3 years. But this time it was a part and product of the newly constituted SMIMS Research Unit. The workshop was held for 2 days on 20 & 21 October 2009. There was an excellent response from the students’ side as anticipated. We had to restrict the participants to only 30.

The programme was much focused. The objective was to train the students in Research Methodology so that at the end of the workshop the students would be able to construct a research proposal by selecting and applying the appropriate research design and execute the research and effectively present the results to scientific meetings or publication.

The faculty from our Institution effectively managed all the sessions. The participants were given a Research Handbook to go through the process in detail. At the end of the workshop, all the 30 students presented their own protocol with much enthusiasm. Of them 7 protocols were chosen for immediate undertaking. Others shall commence as and when the students become free from their exams.

Lunch snacks and tea were served on both days and everybody had a wonderful experience as evidenced by the feed-back session at the end of the workshop.

Medical Education in India has come a long way since the establishment of the first Medical College in Calcutta in the year 1835. After decades of following the original British system, India has finally awoken to the need for a paradigm shift in Medical Education.

Along with the rapid developments in the field of Medicine, Medical Education methodologies have progressed in leaps and bounds globally. With over 70% of the population in grossly underserved rural areas, India still struggles to find ways to integrate global advancements in Medical Education to suit the pressing health needs of the country. The answer to this seems to be in the “Indianised Implementation of International Medical Education’.

Leading the efforts in this direction is none other than the apex regulating body of Medical Education in the country – The Medical Council of India. In its Platinum Jubilee Year, the MCI is undertaking widespread consultations and promoting in-depth deliberations towards streamlining the Medical Education system in the country.

It is in this regard that the Sree Mookambika Institute of Medical Sciences, Kulasekharam conducted a National Seminar on 21st Century Medical Education in India 23rd & 24th September, 2008 for the Medical Faculty.

Over a period of two days there were Didactic Sessions by Prominent figures in the field of Medical Education, Structured Interactive Sessions, Group Discussions and soul-warming Excursions.

The following topics were dealt with by the eminent medical faculty are :

1. Gaps in Medical Education – Restructuring & Integrating Systems unique to India – Dr. C.N. Deivanayagam, Physician & Former Director of Institute of Chest Medicine, Chennai

2. Telemedicine – what, why & How – Dr. Sachinkale, Moderator, Pathoindia.com, Mumbai

3. Microteaching – It’s Need & Possibilities – Dr. M.K. Gajapathy,Former Joint Director of Collegiate Education, Tamilnadu

4. The Spirit of Enquiry & The Medical Curriculam – Dr. S.R. Chandra, Prof. & Head of Neurology, Govt Medical College, Trivandrum

5. Simulated Patient Management & Problem Based Learning – Dr. M. Iyappan, Prof. & Head of General Surgery

6. Doctors as Leaders of the Health Team – Dr. Anoop Lal, Asst. Professor, Community Medicine,

7. Health Care Economics in India – Dr. V. Ramankutty, Health Economist & Professor, Achutha Menon Centre for Health Science Studies, Trivandrum

8. Medical Ethics – The Present Scenario- Dr. R. Sreenivasakannan, Asst. Professor, Pathology

More than two hundred delegates from various Medical Institutions all over South India participated the conference.

The celebrations of the Platinum Jubilee Year of the Medical Council of India commenced on 23rd of September 2008.

The seminar was inaugurated by Dr. C.K. Velayuthan Nair, Chairman of Sree Mookambika Institute of Medical Sciences, Kulasekharam, and Kuthuvilakku was lighted by Dr. Mrs. Rema V. Nair, Director of the Institution.

Dr. P. Sreedevi, Principal of the Institution, presided over the function. The special Representative of the MCI, Dr. Rajan, Associate Professor of Radiology, Calicut Medical College, Calicut offered felicitations.

The two days function concluded with interactive participation and appreciation of the delegates. The entire programme was organized by our college academic committee incurring an expenditure of Rs. 2.5 lacs. The scientific deliberations were useful to all the faculty who attended the conference.

The delegates enjoyed the hospitality. A traditional lunch, a gala banquet, cultural programmes and entertainments by our medical students and site seeing were arranged and all of them happened to be memorable ones to each and every one who participated the celebrations.
